Could flood water affect a Hyundai Santa Fe?

Can flood water affect the fly wheel on a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe CRDi?

Expert answer

Hi Seamus,

Flood water can affect the whole car so it's difficult to say. While I guess it could cause rusting of parts of the flywheel, I believe the biggest problem could be the crankshaft sensor. That probably won't like being immersed in dirty water for any length of time.

Hi Stephen,

Yup, it's brilliant and if you get one younger than five years old, it'll still be under its original factory warranty. Cracking car.

Ford Fiesta or Hyundai i20 for €11,000?

I have up to €11,000 to spend on a 3/4-year-old car. I was thinking of either a Ford Fiesta or a Hyundai i20 - which is the better buy? And is it better to buy between now and Christmas, or wait until the New Year?

Hi Pauline,

At that age, I'd put the Fiesta ahead of the Hyundai. It's better to drive by far, better looking too and barely any less well made or reliable. True, the Hyundai has that long warranty, but at four years old that's coming to an end, so the balance swings back to the Ford. Get the brilliant 1.25-litre petrol engine and I don't think you'll go too far wrong. Lots out there to choose from so be picky when it comes to history, condition and price.

The end of December is the quietest for used car sales in dealers so you could strike a good bargain if you go in there with a cash offer ready to drive away. The New Year could be a bit busier if you're buying through a franchise that also sells new cars.

What's the noise in my Hyundai Sonata?

On my 2006 Hyundai Sonata CRDi I can hear a high pitched continuous bleep for about 10 seconds followed by a click from the engine just after switch off. This happens twice every time. What can it be?

Hi Greg,

That sounds to us like a relay that's on the way out. Pop the bonnet, get a friend to start and turn off the car and you should be able to pinpoint which relay it's coming from and replace it.

Is it km or miles in this Hyundai's odometer?

Is the mileage clock in a 2005 Hyundai Accent in km or in miles?

Micheál O Deasmhúnaigh (Cork)

Nov 2014 Filed under: mileage

Expert answer

Hi Micheál,

As 2005 is the year Ireland changed over to km/h and kilometres it's difficult to know for sure. We'd expect it to be in miles. No matter, in every car it should be quite obvious. If the bigger writing on the speedometer is mph then the odometer is in miles.

Hope that helps

SEAT Leon, Kia cee'd or Hyundai i30?

Which is best: SEAT Leon, Kia cee'd or Hyundai i30? I am currently driving a 2012 SEAT Ibiza, but looking to change in 2015. Not sure of the three listed which one offers best value for money. Also whilst I do around 10,000- to 12,000 miles per year it's mostly urban and not stuck in traffic. I can't decide whether or not to go for diesel option as spec seems better in same.

Hi Gerry,

You've picked three difficult cars to choose between. Obviously, both the Hyundai and Kia are essentially the same car beneath the skin, and both come with temptingly low prices and long, long warranties. The SEAT's three-year warranty looks a bit brief in comparison, but then you are buying into a car with excellent reliability and high quality, so there's that.

You've also got an odd combination of relatively high mileage, but in an urban location, which suggests that you won't be working up enough speed to generate exhaust heat to keep a diesel particulate filter (DPF) clean. With all that in mind, I think your best best might be a Leon 1.2 TSI petrol. It's a cracking engine, nearly as good as a diesel on fuel economy, but with no nasty surprises waiting in the exhaust. Both the Hyundai and Kia are excellent cars, but both are best experienced as diesels.

What diesel replacement for my Golf should I go for?

I am driving a 2000 Volkswagen Golf petrol and I need to change to diesel. I have about €7,000 to spend; what would you recommend?

Hi Tina,

Well, it all depends on what kind of car you want. Trading in your old Golf and adding €7,000 probably gives you a budget of between €8-9k and that, thankfully, means the world is your motorised oyster.

If you want to be sensible, you could just stick with what you know - there are plenty of 2008 Golf 1.9 TDI models around in your price range and there are few cars that are better to be honest. Plenty of Focus, Astra, Auris and Kia cee'd options around too if you fancy a change.

You could though use the opportunity to trade up. Fancy an Audi A4 Avant? A BMW 520d? A Honda Accord? A Hyundai Santa Fe? We found all of these inside your notional budget. But carefully of course - abandon anything without a full service history and check condition very very carefully,  but there are plenty of options for you.

What compact MPV do you recommend?

I am driving an 04 Opel Meriva and am looking for a second hand car replacement that would be similar to what I have. What do you recommend?

Expert answer

Hi Brian,

It depends on what sort of money you were thinking of spending, but there are a lot of good compact MPVs out there now. It's tempting to suggest another Meriva, simply because they're a thoroughly good car, but worth also checking out the Hyundai ix20, the Kia Venga, the Citroen C3 Picasso and the Honda Jazz.

Which big 4x4 to go for with €9,000 budget?

I am thinking of buying a second hand four-wheel drive. Something like a Range Rover, Land Rover, Volkswagen Touareg or similiar. I only have €9,000 to spend therefore will be looking at anything from 2003 to 2006. Most have about 120,000 miles or more. I am worried I might end up in a whole load of pain buying something that old. Any suggestions?

I know there are the old reliables like the Kia Soretno and Hyundai Sante Fe, but I am afraid they are a little bland for me.

Hi Michael,

Well, the simple secret is to buy very carefully and don’t touch anything that doesn’t come with a full and complete service history. Old Land Rovers and Range Rovers are always a bit troublesome (although much less so than they used to be), but a Touareg should be a solid choice. Of course, if you want ultimate reliability you should just buy a Toyota Land Cruiser...
