With €10,000 what diesel auto saloon do you recommend?
What are best diesel options 2009 or 2010 for fuel efficiency? Must be automatic, mid-range, up to 2.0-litre. I had been considering the likes of the Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi, Volvo S60, Volkswagen Jetta or any of the Audis. Budget c€10,000.

Hi Dan,
Of all the ones you've mentioned there, I'd actually have a long, hard look at the Volkswagen Jetta. True, it's not the most exciting car of all, but with the 1.6 TDI diesel engine coupled to the DSG automatic gearbox, you should be able to squeeze terrific fuel economy out of it: 55mpg should be easily do-able, perhaps even the sunny side of 60mpg. It's sweeter to drive than you'd think too, really comfy and built like a tank.
What do you think?
Should I trade my Polo for this Ford Focus?
Hi,
I would like to purchase a 2005 Ford Focus LX manual model from a SIMI dealer who is asking €4,950 for a trade in with 55,000 on the clock, NCT just passed, timng belt done, with all Ford service history and a three-month warranty. I have a Volkswagen Polo 1.4 automatic with 62,000 miles on the clock in average condition. Offer price: €2,450, so I should pay €2,500 more? Is this trade in worth it?

Hi Simon,
That’s absolutely top-value for a 2005 Focus, so the car would want to be in exceptionally good condition and come with a full and complete service history and a decent warranty to command that kind of price. You haven’t given us a year for your Polo so it’s rather difficult to value but we think you could potentially find better value on the Focus out there.
What saloon should I replace my Chevrolet Aveo with?
What is the best saloon car to drive? Thinking of purchasing a new or used car. I have a 2008 Chevrolet Aveo and would not want anything too expensive.

Hi Richard,
There is lots of good choice out there in the compact saloon world, whether you're buying new or used. The Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Jetta, Skoda Octavia, Ford Focus Saloon or Mazda3 Saloon all spring to mind and all make solid purchases. Just one thing - for pity's sake, don't buy another Aveo - not only is it cheap, nasty and bad to drive, but it was one of the worst-scoring cars ever on the EuroNCAP crash test.

Hi Tommy,
How much should I expect for my Ford Mondeo?
How much trade in value should I expect for a 2007 Ford Mondeo? It is a Northern Ireland import so has a higher spec than the usual Zetec ROI models including voice control etc. It is a Zetec model with 95k miles. Only reason I'm thinking of trading it in is to go to 2008 or newer for lower road taxes.
Cheers, K

Hi Keith,
The extra spec probably won't make much difference I'm afraid. Once there's a few basic items such as air conditioning, a decent stereo and some nice wheels, most second hand buyers don't care about spec - they're only interested in the car itself, its history and its likely reliability. With that in mind I'd say you're looking at a value of between €8,000 and €9,000.
Can you help my mechanic fix my Focus?
Hi, my mechanic has put a new (well second hand 2007) engine into my 2006 Ford Focus but it's misfiring on one of the cylinders. He tried replacing the coil, discovered that's not the issue and is now in the process of changing out various sensors, but nothing has worked so far. He says there's not a problem with the new engine and is running out of ideas. Would you have any suggestions?

Hi Eimead,
Assuming your mechanic already tried HT plug leads and the actual spark plugs the next thing to look into would be injectors.
Hope you get to the bottom of your problem
Can you tell me about any problems with the Ford S-Max?
Can you tell me about any faults/problems in 2007 Ford S-Max 1.8 six-speed?

Hi Deck,
There seems to be a bit of split in S-Max ownership between those who have solidly reliable cars and those who keep suffering annoying niggles. Electrical faults are surprisingly common, and can range from knackered windscreen wipers to a fault that drains the battery over the course of a couple of days. Other have complained of some loose-fitting interior trim, especially around the doors. Keep an eye out too for clonking noises coming from the steering, stiff brake pedals or the diesel engine cutting out mysteriously.
What alternatives are there to the Ford S-Max?
What alternatives are there to the Ford S-Max? We want to trade ours in. We want a five-seater with the option of easily converting to a seven-seater when needed.

Hi Reg,
Well, there are a couple of good options around although few of them offer quite as much space as the S-Max. The Citroen C4 Picasso, Volkswagen Touran and Toyota Verso are all smaller than the Ford, but offer plenty of space for five, with room for seven at a pinch. Or you could try the always-excellent SEAT Alhambra (sliding doors are handy in tight car parks) or even the (not very common) Mazda5.
If none of those tickle your fancy, and if you’re looking more for a proper five-seater with jump seats for another two, allow me to pull out of the hat my always-ready answer to seven-seater conundrums - a Mercedes E-Class Estate with those clever folding seats in the boot.
I need help finding a diesel car for €2,000...
I need help finding a diesel car for €2,000: I need a car to carry two small kids also, something up to 1.6 maybe, was thinking of a car in the Peugeot 307 or Renault Mégane size, looking for something reliable to keep for a few years, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your help,
Barry

Hi Barry,
To be blunt, you're going to struggle to get a decent diesel engined car at that price level. There do seem to be one or two diesel Peugeot 307s or Renault Méganes around at that sort of money but we'd advise serious caution before purchase - neither have a great reputation for reliability.
Unless you're covering mega-miles every week, you would probably be much, much better off getting a tidy 1.4 petrol hatchback, perhaps a circa 2002 Toyota Corolla? Really solid on the reliability front, excellent fuel economy and affordable motor tax. It would be a much better idea than going all out for diesel but ending up with a less reliable car.
What do you think?
Evoque, GLA, 3 Series or Mazda CX-5?!
I'm driving a Audi A4 4 1.9 diesel and I will be trading in over the next few months. Mercedes-Benz has offered me best deal so far to buy a GLA 220 Urban model. I am also looking at 3 Series BMW Sport 318d, and the Range Rover Evoque and I looked at the Mazda CX5. I drove the Audi Q3 last year and I was very disappointed with the seats. Which of the above would you recommend? My heart would love the Evoque, but my head says it's not a German. I am a lady driver doing mostly motorway and around town driving. I would appreciate any opinion you may have.
