Focus or Golf for long daily journey?
I'm thinking of buying a 2006 Volkswagen Golf 1.9 TDI diesel or 2006 Ford Focus 1.6 diesel for daily journey from Cork to Kilkenny. What would you advise? Difference of €3k in the price.

Hi Colin,
There's not much to choose between the two in terms of overall talent, practicality or reliability, but my instinct would be to go for the Golf - that second generation Focus had a rather plain, unlovely cabin whereas the Golf's is much comfier and more welcoming - important stuff with a long regular journey like yours. The only other thing to consider would be the cabin space - if you often carry tall passengers in the back seats, then go for the Ford, it's much more spacious.

Is the 2010 Volvo S40 a good buy?
Is a 2010 Volvo S40 with 91,000km on it good to buy?
Meeka Nimmons (Grovetown)Aug 2014 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Meeka,
I personally bought a 2006 Volvo V50 1.6 diesel, which is the estate version of the S40 so I know a little about them. I'm assuming that S40 is 1.6 diesel as well, as most are from that year. The most important thing about this engine is that it is used regularly at motorway speed (to burn off deposits on the diesel particulate filter - DPF) and that oil changes are also regular, and done with the right oil. Insist on a full service history and the more reputable the garage the better.
Make sure the DPF warning light is present when the ignition is turned on and that it then goes out soon after the car is started up. If it's missing completely it means there's a reason someone removed it - walk away.
Other than that I found the car to be very well equipped for the price, making it much better value than a similarly priced Focus or Golf from the same year. It's also more spacious than those cars - though not by much.

Should I trade my Polo for this Ford Focus?
Hi,
I would like to purchase a 2005 Ford Focus LX manual model from a SIMI dealer who is asking €4,950 for a trade in with 55,000 on the clock, NCT just passed, timng belt done, with all Ford service history and a three-month warranty. I have a Volkswagen Polo 1.4 automatic with 62,000 miles on the clock in average condition. Offer price: €2,450, so I should pay €2,500 more? Is this trade in worth it?

Expert answer
Hi Simon,
That’s absolutely top-value for a 2005 Focus, so the car would want to be in exceptionally good condition and come with a full and complete service history and a decent warranty to command that kind of price. You haven’t given us a year for your Polo so it’s rather difficult to value but we think you could potentially find better value on the Focus out there.
What saloon should I replace my Chevrolet Aveo with?
What is the best saloon car to drive? Thinking of purchasing a new or used car. I have a 2008 Chevrolet Aveo and would not want anything too expensive.

Hi Richard,
There is lots of good choice out there in the compact saloon world, whether you're buying new or used. The Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Jetta, Skoda Octavia, Ford Focus Saloon or Mazda3 Saloon all spring to mind and all make solid purchases. Just one thing - for pity's sake, don't buy another Aveo - not only is it cheap, nasty and bad to drive, but it was one of the worst-scoring cars ever on the EuroNCAP crash test.
Can you help my mechanic fix my Focus?
Hi, my mechanic has put a new (well second hand 2007) engine into my 2006 Ford Focus but it's misfiring on one of the cylinders. He tried replacing the coil, discovered that's not the issue and is now in the process of changing out various sensors, but nothing has worked so far. He says there's not a problem with the new engine and is running out of ideas. Would you have any suggestions?

Hi Eimead,
Assuming your mechanic already tried HT plug leads and the actual spark plugs the next thing to look into would be injectors.
Hope you get to the bottom of your problem

Is it possible to get scrappage when buying a used car?
Nicholas Tubritt (Waterford)Jul 2014 Filed under: scrappage
Expert answer
Hi Nicholas,
There is no government-funded scrappage scheme in place in Ireland at the time of writing (July 2014), but those that existed in the past were set up to encourage buying a new car, not a used one. Some car makers continue to use the term 'scrappage' for trade-in deals they are offering, but to our knowledge these also focus solely on new car purchases.
Hope that helps
What is my 2009 Ford Focus worth?
What is my 2009 Ford Focus Ghia 1.8 diesel with 106,000km worth? Brand new injector set installed recently. Manages in the region of 50mpg even with aircon selected. In nice order.
Thank you.

Hi Peter,
Probably about €9,000 on a trade in, maybe slightly north of €10k if you sell it yourself.
Does my Ford Focus have a timing belt?
I've just bought a Ford Focus TDCi 1.8 with 135,000km on the clock; lovely car, but I can't find out if it has a timing belt or chain. Can you help me find out?
Louise Davies (Gwent)Jun 2014 Filed under: servicing
Expert answer
Hi Louise,
That car has a timing belt, which should be replaced every 125,000 miles (or 200,000 kilometres). We'd recommend changing it sooner than that, however, say every 100,000 miles, so it would be a good idea to have it changed on your car sooner rather than later.
Hope that helps
How reliable is a seven-year old Mazda3?
How reliable is a seven-year old Mazda3?
Christopher O' Looney (Gwent)Jun 2014 Filed under: reliability
Expert answer
Hi Christopher,
Yes, absolutely. Mazdas are renowned for their reliability, and the 3 is no different. In spite of sharing all its mechanical parts with the second generation Ford Focus, the 3 generally does a little better than the Ford in reliability and surveys. Perhaps the Mazda engineers do the bolts up a little tighter... Some early models apparently suffered from turbo failure on the 1.6 diesel engine but that seems to be the only thing, bar the usual history checks and damage inspection, to be worried about.
Should I go diesel or petrol for a Ford C-Max?
Thinking of buying a 1.6 Ford C-Max from the UK, but have heard mixed reports about the diesel models. Would I be safer going for the petrol one instead?
Catherine Brosnan (Kerry)Jun 2014 Filed under: importing
Expert answer
Hi Catherine,
Not necessarily. The 1.6-litre diesel used in the C-Max is an engine used in a huge variety of cars, from the C-Max to the Focus to the Mondeo to various Citroens, Peugeots, Volvos and even the occasional MINI. This means that, by and large, it's a decent engine with good reliability prospects and millions of miles of use in a massive number of cars to reveal any bugs.
That said, there are a couple of issues to watch for and mostly it's to do with the turbocharger, which can occasionally be a weak point. Usually it's down to a failure of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve, and it can be pretty easily fixed. Watch the parts prices and shop around for quotes if anything does go wrong. Alternators can give trouble too, so be suspicious of any engine or battery warning lights.
