In the wake of Volkswagen's acquisition of Bentley around the turn of the millennium, the brand followed up the original Continental GT with a model it called the Continental Flying Spur, which was essentially a four-door saloon version of the coupe. For the second generation in 2014, though, Bentley dropped the 'Continental' bit of the saloon's name, in order to distinguish the Flying Spur as a line in its own right.
The all-new version, due for a global reveal on June 11, will once again share much with the latest Continental GT - including, if the video below is anything to go by, its 635hp/900Nm W12 engine - but it will stand alone in the Bentley range. It is also the first model from the marque to gain All-Wheel Steering, improving both its nimbleness at low speeds and its stability at higher velocity, while All-Wheel Drive which runs in rear-wheel drive for the majority of the time promises 'classic sports sedan handling characteristics'. We take this to be posh-speak for 'tyre-shredding oversteer'.
Other tech details released so far include the fact the Flying Spur will sit on the Bentley Dynamic Ride air-suspended platform, which means it will have a 48-volt secondary electrical system to provide active anti-roll, and Bentley promises it is a 'ground-up development that pushes the boundaries of both technology and craftsmanship to deliver segment-defining levels of performance and refinement'.
