Aston announces DBS Superleggera model

Next Aston sports car will be called the DBS Superleggera.

What's the news?

Aston Martin has confirmed that the replacement for its two-door Vanquish 'Super GT' sports car will be called the DBS Superleggera. Little else has been confirmed about this new model as yet and the only visual cues we have, ahead of a quarter-two unveiling, is a single image of a portion of its sculpted and vented bonnet bearing the iconic 'Superleggera' script from the Italian coachbuilder, Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera srl.

The short press release mentions that the 'DBS Superleggera will feature the highest levels of performance, craftmanship and design,' but also hinted that weight reduction will play a part in the new car's remit. The Superleggera name was previously associated with the Aston Martin DB4, DB5 and DB6 mark I.

Aston first used the DBS name back in 1967 and then again in 2007 for a car based on the DB9 of the time. That car's designer, Marek Reichman, is now the Chief Creative Officer of the company and, commenting on the new DBS Superleggera, he said, "When you hear the name DBS Superleggera, you know what it is. It's the definitive Aston Martin Super GT. It's an icon, a statement and this one will be no different. We've pushed the boundaries of performance and design to give this car a distinct character and ensure it's worthy of the heritage and weight that this name carries."

Anything else?

We're going to guess that the new DBS Superleggera uses a more powerful version of Aston Martin's twin-turbocharged 5.2-litre V12 petrol engine (revealed in the DB11 Coupe with 608hp and 700Nm of torque). It's understood that Aston is targeting rivals such as the Ferrari 812 Superfast, but it will focus on torque output of the engine as much as it will producing a headline power figure.
