Xpeng’s spacious new L05 family SUV should land in Ireland by mid-2027.

Xpeng L05 electric SUV set for European debut in January

Xpeng has announced another new model for the European market: the L05 SUV, which will get a first outing in front of potential European customers at the Brussels Motor Show in January.

Where does the L05 sit in the Xpeng lineup?

As with the smaller L03, the new L05 will kind of cross over into some of the territory held by the existing Xpeng G6 electric SUV, certainly at the lower end of its potential price structure (which is, in fairness, very much yet to be confirmed right now). It is a bit bigger than the G6, though, and definitely larger than the L03, and is notionally a competitor for the likes of the Mercedes GLC and BMW X3 and iX3. Certainly, Xpeng has been spied benchmarking the L05 against a current GLC at its test track.

Is the Xpeng L05 fully electric?

Yes, and also no. The L05 is already on sale in China, and there it comes with a choice of two batteries, both using the robust, and more affordable, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. There’s an entry-level model with a 58kWh battery, which gives it a 439km range on the WLTP test, and a bigger 71kWh battery that can reach as much as 635km on one charge. Power comes from a 245hp electric motor mounted on the rear axle. We assume that, as with the G6, there’s a high-performance four-wheel drive version in the offing. In China, there’s also an EREV model, a range extender that uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine as a generator. It has an electric WLTP range of 254km, and a combined petrol-electric range of more than 1,100km on the Chinese CLTC official test, but it hasn’t yet been confirmed for Europe.

What tech does the Xpeng L05 have?

Tech is a very big thing with Xpeng. After all, this is a company that also makes personal aviation transports (we’re not saying flying cars because they’re not; they’re more like personal helicopters) and humanoid robots. At the core (literally and figuratively) of the L05 will be Xpeng’s ultra-fast Turing AI chip which supports, among other things, a 17.3-inch main touchscreen, and another 17.3-inch screen that unfolds from the ceiling for the benefit of rear-seat passengers. The Turing chip also allows the L05, theoretically, to use a function called Navigate on Autopilot, whereby you simply input an address into the sat-nav, and the car takes you there, with suitable supervision from you, the driver. There’s also a smarter speech recognition system, which Xpeng calls the Vision-Language-Action (VLA 2.0) model, which is claimed to offer more intuitive voice control.

How big is the Xpeng L05?

It’s 4.9 metres long, so fairly chunky, and has a 702-litre boot, with the fully electric versions also getting a 102-litre front boot, or frunk, in the nose. There’s also a handy slide-out 10-litre drawer in the back so that rear-seat passengers can tidy their stuff away.

When will the Xpeng L05 arrive in Ireland?

No confirmed dates as yet, but expect to see it land here by the middle of next year.

“The Xpeng L05 embraces our vision for the future of family mobility, combining intelligent technology with the space and flexibility modern families need,” said Sven De Smet, Head of Brand and Product at Xpeng Europe. “We look forward to sharing more details about its arrival in Europe at the Brussels Motor Show 2027.”
