The Aston Martin DBX707 is one of the world's fastest and most desirable SUVs going, but now its parent company has taken the model to new heights with a flagship simply known as the 'S'.

What is the core focus of the Aston Martin DBX S?

Its twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine has gained the larger compressor wheels and some internal modifications from the engine of the mega Aston Martin Valhalla supercar that's incoming. This doesn't alter the maximum torque of 900Nm produced in the DBX but does add another 20hp to the mix for the DBX S, taking the peak output to 727hp.

The two most obvious speed metrics of 0-100km/h and top speed, are unchanged from 707 to DBX S (so 3.3 seconds and 311km/h, respectively), but the 0-200km/h time has been trimmed by three tenths of a second to 11.9 seconds outright for the DBX S.

Ah, so it's just more power for the S, then?

No, Aston says this SUV has 'one of the most engaging and responsive driving experiences' going, because the company has sharpened the DBX's chassis and also made it lighter - admittedly with options.

For example, a carbon-fibre roof is not only the largest carbon component fitted to any Aston yet (at three square metres), but it takes 18kg off the kerb weight and right at the very top of the vehicle too, thus reducing the centre of gravity of the S.

Aston further claims it is the first manufacturer to offer a magnesium-wheel option for any SUV, the DBX S able to be fitted with 23-inch wheels made of the lightweight metal for an overall 19kg reduction in unsprung mass; the standard wheels are forged aluminium 23s, for reference.

Even the radiator grille can be switched for a polycarbonate honeycomb item that's lighter, and which subtly shifts the weight balance of the vehicle rearwards.

And what's changed with the drivetrain beyond the power?

With the same torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system as the DBX707, the S can shunt up to 50 per cent of its torque to the front axle and the full 100 per cent to the rear tyres if it wishes, with grunt from the engine going to the wheels via a nine-speed 'wet clutch' gearbox.

This has modified change-up points to reflect the increased rev range of the DBX S compared to the 707, while it is also said to have “more aggressive” downshifts in automatic mode if the SUV is in either of its Sport or Sport+ drive settings.

The steering rack is four per cent faster than that of the DBX707, while the exhaust system is also modified - not only to flow gases from the more potent engine better, but also to enhance the noise on the move.

Stopping power is handled by 420mm front, 390mm rear carbon-ceramic discs, while the suspension is by the uprated air springs and electronic dampers combo seen on the DBX707 from 2024 onwards.

Can you go over the looks and interior?

On the outside, if the honeycomb grille isn't specified then the DBX S has a pure black vaned item instead, which still makes the SUV stand out as the flagship. All of the front splitter, rear diffuser and side sills - pinstriped in one of three colours, which are Rosso Corsa Red, Trophy Silver or Podium Green - are bespoke to the S, as are those distinctive stacked quad exhausts at the rear.

Discreet 'S' badging on the wings and the option of more carbon-fibre parts further help the visual appeal of the ultimate DBX.

Inside, herringbone-patterned seats rendered in a mix of Alcantara and semi-aniline leather are unique to the S, while the 'S' monogram is embroidered onto the seats' head restraints, as well as featuring on the DBX's sill plates and engine plaque.

Two sound systems are offered: the standard effort is a 14-speaker, 800-watt affair; but the upgrade option is a monster Bowers & Wilkins system with 23 speakers, two amps and 1,600 watts of power.

Anything else to add?

The Aston Martin DBX S is available to order now, and the first customers will take delivery of their cars towards the end of this year. Adrian Hallmark, Aston's CEO, added: “Over the last two years, Aston Martin has introduced an entire core collection of next generation sports cars as well as a new DBX; all with a new, entirely bespoke infotainment system designed in-house.

“The marque continues its focus on class-leading performance, ultra-luxury design and innovation, broadening the range of products under each core model. The introduction of DBX S not only reaffirms our commitment to producing the most exciting, rewarding and beautiful cars, it also sends a powerful statement of intent about our ambitions not just for DBX, but for the Aston Martin brand.”
