Upgraded styling and cabin for Peugeot's big seven-seat 5008 SUV.

Having shown off the updated 3008 crossover just the other day, Peugeot is now showing us its similarly-updated 5008 seven-seat SUV.

New grille, new lights

Hardly surprisingly, given that the two cars share a common structure and engines, the changes for the new Peugeot 5008 are pretty much the same as those for the 3008. They start on the outside, where the 5008 gains a similar full-width grille and new headlights that major on LED technology. There's LED tech, too, for the 'fang' lights that cut deep into the bumper and provide the car's daytime running lights.

The 5008's number badge has also moved up to the leading edge of the bonnet, as per the Peugeot 508 saloon, and there are new air scoops and a painted tread plate for the front bumper. As with the 3008, GT and GT-Line models get a specific, sportier, grille. GT-Line and GT models also get full LED headlights with cornering function and Peugeot's new 'Foggy Mode,' which reduces the headlamp intensity when it's misty.

At the rear, the look is more or less the same as before, but the 'three-claw' brake lights are updated with LED bulbs and smoked lenses, and combine with a 'black panel' in the tailgate to make the rear look a little wider and lower. There are new paint options too, including Celebes Blue and Metallic Copper, plus a 'Black Pack' that includes dark-finished chrome elements and black 19-inch alloy wheels.

New infotainment screen

Inside, while much of the cabin remains the same, the screens have been updated. The 12.3-inch digital instrument panel gets new graphics, while there's a new ten-inch central infotainment screen that keeps its neat little row of 'piano key' shortcut buttons beneath.

There's optional Nappa leather, plus a new 'Dark Lime Wood' trim option, and a frameless rear-view mirror if you fancy one. As before, the 5008 comes with seven seats, including three individual seats in the middle row, and two folding and removeable seats in the boot. Boot space remains among the best for its class, with between 780 litres and 1,940 litres available.

New tech includes active cruise control with stop-and-go if you pick the eight-speed automatic gearbox option, plus the latest-generation automatic emergency braking system, lane-keeping steering and even optional infra-red 'Night Vision' that allows you to see things well beyond the range of the main headlamp beams.

Buyers get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connections too, as well as wireless phone charging and an optional 515-Watt Focal stereo system.

Still no hybrid option

Somewhat disappointingly, there's no hybrid option yet for the Peugeot 5008. Although the 3008 can now be had with a choice of two plug-in hybrid powertrains, the 5008 is sticking stolidly to internal combustion power. The engine line-up is basically carried over from before, with a choice of 130hp 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol, 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol with 180hp, and 1.5-litre diesels with either 130hp or 180hp. An eight-speed automatic gearbox is optional, but comes as standard on both 180hp engines.

Standard equipment on basic Active models includes the third-row seating, 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless ignition, dual-zone air conditioning, rear parking assistance, a DAB radio and the 'Visibility Pack.'

Sales of the updated 5008 will begin towards the end of this year.
