Skoda Elroq, VW ID.4 or Volvo EX40 (or EX30)?
The question
Hi,
We would like to move into our first electric vehicle and have a shortlist of three cars: the Skoda Elroq, the VW ID.4 and the Volvo EX40 (or EX30). We currently drive a 2017 Volvo XC60. We are a family of four with two teenage girls and we mainly use our car for running around the city with the occasional family holiday road trip of 4-5 hours.
Do you have a preference or any information that can assist us to make a choice? We would also be interested in your thoughts on buying new vs second-hand EVs.

Hi Shannon,
You can certainly save some money on going for a used EV, though insist on a battery health check certificate before you commit to the purchase.
In theory, the Skoda Elroq sits beneath the Skoda Enyaq and it’s the Enyaq that’s the same size as the VW ID.4. However, the Elroq isn’t a lot smaller inside. Just watch for the fact it has a smaller boot. Aside from that, we’d prefer the Elroq over the ID.4.
Depending on when you’re looking to get the EV, you should know that the ID.4 is about to be replaced by the all-new VW ID. Tiguan, and it’s a superior car. Might be a while before it arrives in Ireland though.
Likewise, there’s an updated Volvo EX40 coming early in 2027. The existing one feels larger than the ID.4 and Elroq, and it is a lovely car, but it actually has a smaller boot even than the Elroq. Nevertheless, it feels like a more premium product than the VW or Skoda.
Given you have two growing girls, I would not recommend the Volvo EX30, as it’s quite small in the back.
A couple of cars you’ve not mentioned that we’d suggest are also worth checking out: the MGS6 EV and the Renault Scenic.
Don’t hesitate to come back to us if we can help you narrow down your search.
