Is a new Ford Explorer the best EV option for me?
The question
Hi guys,
I saw your video review of the Ford Explorer EV and I'm thinking of buying a full EV new at the ~€50k mark, but I'm completely lost. I'm not a car expert. I live in Dublin but drive home to Kerry regularly (350km journey).
Could I ask for a single make/model recommendation for the best EV for the money please? I want to embrace full EV, but want a reliable recommendation before I get bamboozled by a car salesperson!
I want boot space for sports gear, a comfortable drive, it to be practical, reliable etc. Generally, just the driver and a passenger in the car, but will definitely have people in the back seats on occasion.
I'm always hauling stuff from Dublin to Kerry so the five-door SUV is the best for me I think.
I have a 2008 Audi A4 so long overdue an upgrade. I'm 42 so getting into a lower saloon car is getting harder…
I'm leaning towards the Ford Explorer - RWD 77kWh as an option - all round a solid choice?

Hi Dermot,
The Explorer is a decent enough car for sure, though I'd strongly urge you to test drive several other alternatives before you settle on it, as it is based on the same underpinnings as the VW ID.4, which has been around for a while and is due to be replaced later this year.
For example, the infotainment system is only ok, and the steering-wheel buttons are fiddly, while this car has drum brakes on the back that have issues in the ID.4. Also, though you don't need a huge family car, the Explorer's boot is on the small side for this size of vehicle. All these things you can check for yourself on a test drive, but we'd highly recommend you also check out these alternatives:
