How much to tax a VW van privately?

How do I calculate the tax if I want to tax a 2.0-litre diesel Volkswagen Transporter privately?

Hi John,

It goes back on to the old by-engine-capacity tax system, if you’re taxing a van as a private car, so if it has a 2.0 engine then you’re looking at €710 a year.

I have a fault in my 181 Ford Fiesta.

I bought a 181 Ford Fiesta 1.5 diesel and to date I have had to call the AA out three times for engine faults. Also the engine warning light comes on every few weeks, but the last time the AA came out, I was told to ignore it as they could find nothing wrong. Ford Ireland is saying they are covered because I have the free AA cover, but I have lost three days work waiting for a replacement car etc. Do you know if there have been other reports of faults in the Fiesta?

Expert answer

Hi Brian,

To be honest, no — we haven’t heard of any major problems with the current-shape Fiesta, but perhaps the problem lies in the diesel engine and how it’s being used? If you’re only covering a relatively low mileage, you could be getting a clogged up exhaust particulate filter, which is a common issue with diesels that get driven for short hops, or stuck in traffic a lot. Beyond that, if the car has caused you to stop three times in succession, to the point of having to call out roadside assistance, then clearly there is an issue and, if it’s not the particulate filter problem, then it could be something more serious. As a 181, you’re still well within warranty, so I would demand of your Ford dealer that they do something, as there must be a problem somewhere.

Should I wait to import a 2018 car?

Hi, I have bought a 2018 car in the UK and am wondering would I save a lot on VRT if I wait until the beginning of January to bring it in rather than mid December as the car will be a year older then.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Gareth,

It won’t make a huge difference to be honest. Because Revenue take note of the month of registration as well as the year, the extra few weeks won’t really affect the VRT charge very much. And if it’s an older diesel, definitely get the VRT done before January as on the 1st, the new NOx tax comes in and that could add a significant amount extra to your bill.

What do you think of the Merc A-Class Saloon?

Hi,

have you some views of the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class Saloon? What models are available? Is it value for money? Thinking of buying one for the 201 registration.

Hi Patrick,

We have indeed reviewed the A-Class Saloon and you can read our thoughts on the car here. As for whether it’s good value for money, it kind of depends on how you look at it. Compared to other similarly-priced cars — Volkswagen Passat, Skoda Superb, or Opel Insignia for example — it’s not good value as you’re paying the same or more for a smaller car, probably with less standard equipment. That three-pointed star on the bonnet costs a fair bit… On the other hand, viewing the A-Class Saloon as a slightly smaller (but not that much so) alternative to the C-Class saloon — an entirely valid point of view — it’s actually really good value. Models available range from the basic A 180 petrol and A 180 d diesel versions, through A 200 and A 200 d, all the way up to the slightly rabid 300hp A 35 AMG model.

How much VRT on a Toyota Amazon 4.2?

Hi, I am looking at importing a 2005 Toyota Amazon VX 4.2 diesel with 147,000 miles on the clock from the UK, but the ROS VRT calculator only shows Land Cruisers up to 3.0-litre and does not list the Amazon. How much would the VRT be approx?

Expert answer

Hi Ger,

It’s a tough car to value, the Amazon, not only because they’re so thin on the ground in Ireland, but also because they really, really, hold onto their value. I’d take a wild guess at a VRT charge of around €9,000 (based on a rough calculation of a €25,000 valuation), but Revenue could well take a different view. By the way, if you’re going to import one, do it before Jan 1st. The NOx emissions for a 4.2 diesel Amazon are 570mg/km, which means an extra VRT charge of €4,850...

How much to tax a Sprinter van privately?

How much would it be to tax a Mercedes Sprinter for private use?

Thanks

Hi Simon,

It depends on the engine, as to tax a Sprinter as a private vehicle, you’d have to go back on to the old engine capacity taxation system. So for a Sprinter with the 2.1-litre diesel, you’d have to pay €906 per year, and for one with the 3.0-litre V6 engine, you’d be looking at €1,494 per year.

How much VAT on a Nissan X-Trail?

Just curious, how much VAT on a 2018 Nissan X-Trail?

Tracy Uzama (Tralee)

Expert answer

Hi Tracy,

Do you mean VRT? VAT, Value Added Tax, is only charged on a new vehicle, or on an import that’s younger than six months old, or has less than 6,000km on the clock. At the current 23 per cent VAT rate, you’d pay around €6,000 on a brand new Nissan X-Trail in VAT.

If you do mean VRT, or Vehicle Registration Tax, then for a 2018-registered X-Trail with the 1.6 dCi diesel engine, you’re looking at around €5,000 for VRT. If you’re importing after January 1st, then there’ll be the extra NOx levy to pay, which, with the basic X-Trail’s 40mg/km NOx rating, means an extra €200 on top of the VRT.

Is xDrive worth getting on a BMW 3 Series?

Hi,

I have been driving a BMW 320 diesel automatic for two years now. I can't believe how poorly it sticks to the road on typical wet or damp Irish roads. I have owned two front-wheel-drive cars previously and miss the grip and poise they offer. I am thinking of going for a second hand 320d with xDrive. Will it make much of a difference to the handling?

Expert answer

Hi Barry,

I think this sounds more like a tyre issue than anything else. Is there a possibility that the car is on cheap, aftermarket, tyres? If so, get them replaced with a set of something decent — Michelins or Bridgestones. Going for xDrive would help, of course, as the extra bit of traction is never a bad thing, but it does add (slightly) to your running costs because of the weight and the extra frictional losses.

How much to tax a VW Caddy privately?

So how much is the tax for a 1.6 diesel VW Caddy taxed privately?

Tristan McMurray (Dublin)

Nov 2019 Filed under: taxation

Expert answer

Hi Tristan,

If you’re taxing a van or commercial vehicle as a private car, you go back to the old by-engine-capacity system, and for a 1.6-litre engine that’s €514 per year.

Costs to import a 2012 Kia Soul?

I am considering buying a car with English registration, It is a 2012 Kia Soul 1.6 CRDi 2 five-door automatic diesel with almost 40,000 miles on the clock. I would like to know (1) the cost of Irish registration and (2) what tax band would it come under, and the annual cost of motor tax.

Thank you

Mary

Mary Doyle (Ballaghadereen)

Expert answer

Hi Mary,

That version of the Soul, with the automatic gearbox, has CO2 emissions of 155g/km, so it’ll cost you €390 a year to tax. VRT on import shouldn’t be too steep — probably around the €1,800 mark depending on optional equipment, but bring it in quick — if you leave it until after January 1st you’ll have to pay the extra NOx tax, and that will add €1,975 to your import bill...
