The executive saloon segment has become fiercely competitive with many new models showcasing the very latest technology from infotainment to semi-autonomous driving. Add to that ever-increasing levels of luxury and refinement and buyers in this part of the market are finding themselves spoilt for choice. 1 - BMW 5 Series

For a long time, the 5 Series has been the segment benchmark. Now it faces tougher-than-ever competition. This new generation is an evolution influenced by the larger 7 Series regarding refinement, but it remains very agile. A full range of engines, including plug-in hybrid, is offered, but it’s the humble 520d that’s the absolute star of the line-up.

2 - Mercedes-Benz E-Class

This latest generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class looks quite similar to the larger S-Class, and it feels every bit as refined. The cabin layout gives a real sense of spaciousness and the car comes loaded with technology. It's also great to drive, partly due to its excellent automatic transmission.

3 - Volvo S90

Following on from the impressive XC90, the Volvo S90 propels Volvo into the premium arena thanks to its gorgeous styling and high quality interior. It comes with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive and a slick automatic transmission. A plug-in hybrid T8 version is also due to arrive soon.

4 - Audi A6

The Audi A6 may be now the eldest car in the class, but it still makes for an appealing package. Its spacious interior and high quality finish are big draws, as are the good range of engine and transmissions, and the sportier S line spec makes the A6 look great.

5 - Jaguar XF

Jaguar is back on form with its unmistakable styling of the new XF. A new range of diesel engines offers good performance and economy on paper, but they don't feel as refined as some of its rivals. Still, the XF is a joy to drive, helped by a great chassis.
