1 - Audi A1
The A1 offers contemporary Audi good looks in a compact package with the same premium feel, fit and finish as the German manufacturer's larger cars. Space is a bit tight in the back, but it does have a decently sized boot (270- to 920 litres) and an efficient, broad engine line-up.

2 - MINI Hatch
The iconic MINI Hatch is as good to look at as it is to drive - it has a super chassis and is one of the best to drive superminis around. Its downfall is the lack of space for rear passengers or luggage, but buyers don't care, as the interior upfront is fantastic looking. The MINI Hatch is bursting with personality, too.

3 - DS 3
The DS 3 is a stylish car with some lovely design flourishes making it stand out from the crowd. It has wonderfully large comfortable seats, great visibility and a big boot (285- to 980 litres). One of the best things about the DS 3 is that it offers a mature ride for such a small car.

4 - Opel Adam
The Opel Adam is a handsome little car with loads of personalisation options to make it your own. It has a well laid out interior and the cabin is quiet and well-insulated from outside noise, even at high speeds. The steering is nice and light making it very easy to manoeuvre and park, too.

5 - Alfa Romeo MiTo
The Alfa Romeo MiTo is an eye-catching supermini that comes quite well equipped as standard. There is plenty of room up front, but rear passengers don't fare so well. It is quite a nimble car around town, but we would go for the petrol engine as the diesel option is quite rough.
