Friday Find 28th May 2015

We saw the first photos and details of the new Skoda Superb Combi estate popping up this week, and it'll be launching in Ireland later this summer. We'll get to drive it for the first time in a few weeks, but it jogged our memory of just how brilliant the current Superb Combi is. Enormously spacious, exceptionally comfortable, it's a close-to-perfect family wagon, and one that's built as well as (if not better) than the far more expensive Mercedes E-Class estate.

We found one in Waterford, with the desirable 2.0-litre 140hp TDI diesel engine, for the same price as a mid-spec Ford Fiesta. For that, you're getting a car with a nigh-on unbeatable combo of space, comfort and reliability, and with nice things such as air condition and part-leather trim thrown in too. Can't recommend it highly enough...

Thinking of estates and talking of Mercedes E-Class estates in particular got us thinking though; how about a nice W124 E-Class wagon? One of the best cars Mercedes ever made, the W124 E-Class was apparently built from granite and solid carbon, so strong and long lasting are they.

We found on from a dealer in Galway, with a galactic 255,000km on the clock, but with only the one owner and in immaculate condition. It has an automatic gearbox, creamy leather and the big, lusty 300 TDI diesel engine. Not cheap to tax, but probably worth it, especially as this has the desirable flip-up kiddie seats in the boot, making this sleek estate a genuine seven-seater - all that, plus bags of heritage for under €5k? Pass the chequebook...
