First Impressions: Volkswagen Golf Estate

First Impressions: Volkswagen Golf Estate

Published on February 2, 2015

After a long hiatus from Irish shores, the Volkswagen Golf Estate is officially back. The first thing you notice about this Golf Estate is just how smart it looks. In fact it is possibly the best example, leaving the new Passat aside, of just how upmarket Volkswagen is getting with its new cars. There is more than enough space than you'll most likely need on a day-to-day basis and that rear tailgate extends high enough to give excellent access.

As for the drive, the 1.6-litre TDI packs 110hp and comes with a five-speed manual transmission. It is never going to break any performance records in this guise but it does only emit 102g/km and returns a claimed 72.4mpg (3.9 litres/100km) on a combined cycle - a figure that I could almost believe.

Key tech specs:

- 1.6-litre TDI diesel engine
- 110hp and 250Nm, emitting 102g/km
- Band A3, €190 per annum
- 72.4mpg (3.9 litres/100km)
- 0-100km/h in 11 seconds
- Golf Estate 1.6 TDI Highline starts at €27,085 (1.2-litre TSI Trendline starts at €22,280)
