What's the news?

Renault's flagship Koleos SUV is to get a host of updates including two new engines and an exterior refresh. That design update is subtle, but adds LED headlights as a standard feature across the range. A more prominent front grille design joins larger skid plates to bolster its off-road image, while more chrome trim is intended to give the Koleos a more premium look.

At the rear, there is a new light design with a three-dimensional effect. A new exterior colour called Vintage Red joins the available choices, as do new two-tone alloy wheels. Unlike many of its rivals that have seven-seat versions, Renault only offers the Koleos as a five-seat model, as the company prefers to focus on its outright comfort for passengers. To that end, the rear seat backs on all models will now gain a two-stage reclining function. Additionally, Renault says that it has made improvements to the quality and feel of the materials inside the cabin.

A new 1.8-litre Blue dCi 150 diesel engine joins the line-up and will be available with a front-wheel-drive transmission. Producing 150hp and 340Nm, Renault claims it has tuned the engine for refinement and real-world acceleration. More importantly for buyers, it should be cheaper to run than before, as the new engine has lower CO2 emissions of 143g/km, putting it into a more affordable motor tax band.

The more powerful 2.0-litre Blue dCi 190 produces 190hp and 380Nm while its CO2 emissions are rated at 150g/km. It will also feature Renault's 4x4-i all-wheel-drive transmission. Both engines will use Renault's X-Tronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) as standard. The Active Emergency Braking System (AEBS) is also getting an update to include pedestrian detection across the range.

Anything else?

Further updates to Renault's R-Link 2 infotainment system will include full-screen functionality for Apple CarPlay on both its 7.0- and 8.7-inch units.

Pricing for the updated version of the Renault Koleos is due to be revealed in July, while the first customer deliveries are due to begin in October.
