Ashford Castle opens off-roading course

New off-redoing courses at Ashford Castle range from 90 minutes to seven-hour epics.

What's the news?

Ashford Castle, one of Ireland's most famous hotels, has just opened an off-roading course for its guests to be able to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the west of Ireland.

Two loops have been designed with the help of Olympic cyclist David O'Loughlin, who represented Ireland at the 2008 games in Beijing. The short loop takes around 90 minutes to complete, and is mostly confined to the grounds of Ashford Castle itself (although, given how vast those grounds are perhaps confined isn't exactly the right word...). The long loop is a bit more of an event, taking seven hours, and crossing Derroura Forest Park, known as 'The Gateway To Connemara.'

"Participants will learn how to manoeuvre their vehicle across the challenging terrain for this action packed experience. Put driving skills to the test over natural and purpose built obstacles such as the bumpy 'Rock Garden' and the 'Tipping Point' triangle. The course also offers a deep water crossing, rut driving, descents and ascents and side slope driving manoeuvres in Derroura forest for the ultimate challenge" said a spokesperson for Ashford Castle.

"The Ashford Castle Off Roading Experience is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and be immersed in the rugged landscape of Cong. This unique activity that can be tailored to suit individuals, families, party or corporate groups and experience levels, from first timers to advanced drivers overseen by expert instructors."

The courses are open both to those staying at the hotel and those just walking in, and prices start at €425 for a party of two.
