Ferrari has once again clinched the top prize in the Engine + Powertrain of the Year Awards, with its 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine that powers the 488 GTB and 488 Pista. It is the fourth consecutive year that Ferrari has won the overall award, setting a new record for outright wins.
The rebranding of the awards to Engine + Powertrain of the Year reflects the changing times in the automotive industry. Categories are now based on power outputs rather than displacement, so that hybrid and electric powertrains compete in the same category as combustion engines. Its jury is made of up a wide range of experienced automotive journalists around the world and includes CompleteCar.ie's Editor Shane O' Donoghue and Road Test Editor, Dave Humphreys.
The title of Best Electric Powertrain goes to the Jaguar I-Pace, a car that not only offers a good battery range but delivers engaging driving dynamics too, making it one of the best-handling electric vehicles currently in the market. The I-Pace's powertrain also claimed top honours in the 350-450PS and Best new Engine categories, as well as finishing second in the overall International Engine + Powertrain category.
Dean Slavnich, co-chairman, International Engine + Powertrain of the Year Awards, said, "Since its launch in 2016 the Ferrari V8 engine remains undefeated at the International Engine + Powertrain of the Year Awards, winning 14 trophies over three years. And now it has won the overall award four years straight, cementing its place in the history books. I very much doubt such an achievement will ever be matched again."
