Mitsubishi ASX crossover drops its diesel engine, gains new infotainment system.

What's the news?

Mitsubishi will launch its updated ASX crossover at the upcoming Geneva motor show. The ASX has been part of Mitsubishi's range since 2010, and this will mark its second major update since the original launch.

In that time, it's managed to find 1.3 million homes around the world, and is currently Mitsubishi's third best-selling model.

The latest update gives it what Mitsubishi calls a 'robust & ingenious' new styling language, which takes plenty of cues from the recently facelifted Outlander and L200 pickup. It gets the new 'Dynamic Shield' grille and lights layout, with LED lighting, and new foglamps stuck out on the edges of the bumper.

At the rear, there are new LED combination lamps, plus a skid-plate effect on the back bumper, and there are some new colour options - Red Diamond, Sunshine Orange, and Oak Brown.

Inside, there's a new eight-inch central infotainment display (up from seven inches in the old model) which can now show videos stored on USB sticks (presumably not when on the move, though...).

There's also a new TomTom sat nav system, which gets realtime traffic information if you connect it to the web with your smartphone. Coming soon will be a new app that gathers data from the speedometer, odometer, warning lamp and other vehicle information and which will check fuel remaining and provide navigation to the nearest fuel stations, and will provide guidance on optimum maintenance and inspection intervals.

On the engine front, the old 1.8-litre diesel engine has been dropped, and in its place for European markets is a 2.0-litre MIVEC (Mitsubishi Variable Valve Timing) petrol engine which comes with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a CVT automatic. Front- and four-wheel drive will be available, and there are updated safety systems too, including a strengthened forward body structure, and a forward collision mitigation emergency braking system.
