Sportier mid-sized BMW SUV gains 480- and 510hp powerplants in M transformation of the X4.

What's the news?

So, with the BMW X3 already confirmed to have high-power M derivatives at the top of its tree, it's time for the X4 to have the same treatment, with the M40i and M40d models now overruled in the hierarchy.

Exterior

The new BMW X4 M is a tiny bit easier to spot, when compared to its normal relations, than the X3 M is compared to a regular X3. Like the X3 M, it gains larger air intakes, side breathers in the front wings, its own design of door mirrors and quad exhausts (plus 20-inch M alloys), but it's the boot lip spoiler that is the easiest to spot. On the harder X4 M Competition model, both this 'Gurney flap' and the rear diffuser can be optioned up in carbon, while the Competition also gets black badging, black door mirrors and kidney grilles, along with larger 21-inch alloy wheels.

Interior

The X4 M and X4 M Competition feature an M-specific instrument cluster, an M leather steering wheel with shift paddles and M buttons, a red start/stop button for the engine and aluminium carbon-effect trim finishers. The M model comes with Vernasca leather trim, while the Competition upgrades that to extended Merino hide clothing M Sport seats with an illuminated logo - this is one area where the X4 M Competition beats the X3 M Competition, as this logo is standard-fit on the X4 and an option on the X3.

Mechanicals

Again, like the X3 M and X3 M Competition, the two fastest X4s use a biturbo 3.0-litre straight-six, delivering 480hp/600Nm in the M and 510hp/600Nm in the M Competition. The performance stats are identical to the related X3s, so the 480hp X4 does 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds while the 510hp Competition is a gnat's quicker at 4.1 seconds. Top speeds are 250- or 280km/h, electronically restricted, the higher figure being dependent on the owner specifying the M Driver's Package. The X4 M twins gain fully revised suspension settings, including an Active M Differential, M-specific suspension with electronically controlled dampers, powerful M compound brakes and M-specific steering. The transmission of all this power is handled by an eight-speed M Steptronic auto, driving all four wheels through a rear-biased M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. As with the regular X4 when compared to an X3, the X4 M and X4 M Competition gain their own suspension and steering settings, to make them ever so slightly sportier to drive than the X3 M and X3 M Competition.

Anything else?

This is the first time either the X3 or the X4 has gained a full-on, proper 'M' model at the top of the line; previous fast X3s and X4s have been M Performance variants, with less power. However, full M SUVs are popular, as evidenced by the X5 M and X6 M.
