New Mitsubishi concept set for Geneva

Mitsubishi ‘Engelberg’ concept named for Alpine village, and it gets electric power.

What's the news?

Hold the phone, we already have a winner for 'Daftest Concept Car Name' for the Geneva motor show that takes place in March - it's the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer.

No, its last name is not Humperdink (or at least, if it is, Mitsubishi hasn't yet said so...). Actually, the Engelberg is named after a town. According to Mitsubishi, it's: "a beautiful and rugged Alpine town with a history of sporting success."

Engelberg is, in fact, a famed ski resort, tucked away in the Swiss Alps not far from Lucerne. In spite of being a rather small town, it's been the birthplace of no fewer than four Olympic skiing gold medallists and was also the home of the impressively named Baroness Felicitas von Reznicek, who managed to combine mountaineering with being a spy, for the Allied side, during WWII.

Not that this helps us in any way to learn anything about the new Mitsubishi. The Engelberg Tourer, as can be seen from the shadowy photo, adopts the new cliff-faced grille and lights arrangement from the L200 pickup, and also seems to be sporting some additional lights mounted to the roof.

We do know that it will be at least partially electric, too. According to Mitsubishi, the Engelberg Tourer will: "Carve its own niche, bringing more SUV, more EV, more technology and more style." That most likely means that it will use a variation on the existing Outlander PHEV's plug-in hybrid system, but it is just possible that it could be a fully electric car. After all, Mitsubishi is now part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, which has plenty of off-the-peg electric hardware that can be used, and Mitsubishi has promised to ramp-up its design and production of fully electric cars.

We'll find out more at the Geneva motor show on the 4th of March.
