AIG Insurance launches new SmartLane driving monitor

New app, which monitors your driving, can get you as much as 20 per cent off your insurance quote.

What's the news?

Dublin GAA stars Jonny Cooper, Jake Malone, Lauren Magee and Ali Twomey have helped AIG Insurance to launch its new SmartLane driving monitor app. The app, which can be downloaded for free for both Apple and Android phones, keeps an eye on your driving, checking to see if you're speeding or driving erratically, and will offer discounts on the cost of insurance to those scoring high enough.

The idea behind the app is much as for other 'spy in the cab' telematics systems, which use the phone's GPS locator and its accelerometers to keep an eye on how you're driving. The difference with this one is that it's a 'try before you buy' one, with no cost up front and no obligation to use the service.

All you have to do is drive for 1,000km over the course of 60 days for the app to judge your driving skills. The closer to a score of 100 that you get, the more you can save on your next insurance quote. Those scoring over 70 will get discounts, while a score between 85 and 89 will get you 15 per cent off, and the title of 'Distinction.' A score of more than 90 will get you a 'Master' level and 20 per cent off.

Speaking ahead of today's launch Aidan Connaughton, Head of Consumer Insurance at AIG in Ireland said: "The uniqueness of our new AIG SmartLane "try before you buy" app is that any driver can download and use it for Free. You don't have to be an AIG customer to use it and take part in the SmartLane challenge. Users of the app will see that when they drive safely their behaviour will be recognised and rewarded. Our hope is that more drivers will use telematics solutions, reaping the benefit of driving more carefully and ultimately saving on their car insurance costs. This is the latest telematics solution from AIG and complements our highly successful XLNTdriver Mobile App and AIG BoxClever young driver product. This cutting edge technology allows us to take a unique approach to pricing car insurance, educating drivers on improving behaviours and helps AIG to communicate with customers in a new way. AIG is committed to safe driving and saving lives in our communities by innovating technology to help improve driving behaviours on the road."
