Edo Competition's take on the Mercedes-AMG GT R can travel in excess of 340km/h...

What's the news?

The last thing the almighty Mercedes-AMG GT R needed was more power - but that's precisely what German tuning company Edo Competition has done, bestowing a huge upturn in outputs on AMG's most intense model.

Based in Ahlen, in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia, Edo has a long association with Mercedes-AMG, as well as Porsche, and specialises in getting more power and performance from some of the country's most impressive cars. Now it has turned its attention to the monster GT R.

As standard, the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo petrol in the Mercedes-AMG delivers 585hp and 700Nm, enough for 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds and a 318km/h limited top speed. Well, Edo Competition has added 75hp and 80Nm to those figures, leading to overall returns of 660hp and 780Nm.

Edo achieved these figures courtesy of increased boost pressure for the turbos and a remap of the engine management to compensate. As a result, the Edo GT R can go beyond 340km/h, with no 0-100km/h time as yet specified.

However, Edo hasn't merely turned up the wick on the V8 and let it loose. It has lowered the chassis of the GT R by 25mm at the front and 20mm at the rear, providing the car with a great stance and also an improved centre-of-gravity. And as it is powered by a Mercedes-AMG V8, then a great soundtrack is also required. Thankfully, Edo says its version of the GT-R has a 'super-throaty, race-car sound' - which is good enough for us.
