With the cancellation of Irish rallying's traditional season opener, the Galway International Rally, there was an opportunity for a new type of event to fill the void. Taking place over the weekend of January 20th and 21st, the Herospec Irish Rallysprint of Champions will take place at Mondello Park, and promises a spectator-friendly format.
Saturday comprises of a traditional rallysprint event, with each competitor getting at least four runs on the mixed-surface course, which utilises some perimeter roads as well as the track and Rallycross sections to give a challenging and varied route.
Results from Saturday will dictate the head-to-head pairings for Sunday's 'Super Special' event, with cars starting side-by-side on the main straight before tackling two laps of an extended version of the Rallycross course. The winner of each battle will progress on to the next round, and drivers knocked out in the first round can avail of a run in the 'Last Chance' competition, ensuring that everyone gets at least two runs on the day.
The event is the brainchild of Sean Hassett and John McCay, and interest has already been expressed by major names from Ireland's main championships. McCay commented: "With all new loose surface sections, this is Mondello Park like you've never seen it before. The unique track layout combines the tarmac of the track and perimeter roads with gravel sections and is sure to test even the best drivers. The event format coupled with full live streaming is sure to make this a very attractive season opener for spectators as well as competitors of all levels."
