New Jeep Wrangler unveiled in Vegas

New Jeep Wrangler unveiled in Vegas New Jeep Wrangler unveiled in Vegas
Trail-busting Jeep Wrangler gets new tech and goes on sale in mid-2018.

What's the news?

It's not very often that a new Jeep Wrangler comes along, but here is the JL model, replacing the long-lived and much-modified JK. We don't have a huge amount of tech detail on the new Wrangler yet, but here's what we do know from its reveal at the SEMA tuning and modifying show in Las Vegas.

It will keep the current model's separate chassis construction, but the body will (in spite of the very similar looks) probably contain a good bit more aluminium, to help keep weight down. US buyers will get four-cylinder and V6 engine options, while Europe will get a diesel (most likely a derivative of the 2.2-litre engine currently found in the Jeep Cherokee and the Alfa Romeo Giulia) and, as will the US, a new hybrid model.

Bodystyles will follow those of the current car, with two and four-door variants, convertible and hard-top, and for the first time ever, there will be a pickup body version, but we'll have to wait till 2019 for that one (if indeed it comes to Europe at all).

As ever, the doors will be removeable, and the windscreen can be folded flat (this time keeping the a-pillar in place for rollover protection) and the cabin will become a good deal more sophisticated, thanks to new touchscreens. There will be a hardcore 'Rubicon' version for serious off-roading, and a new Rain Brake Support system which will help keep the car steadier on the road in inclement conditions.

We'll have more details on the new Wrangler when it makes a full debut at the Los Angeles motor show at the end of November.
