Scooter is first approved fuel cell vehicle

The Suzuki Burgman Fuel-Cell Scooter is the first vehicle to gain Whole Vehicle Type Approval in the European Union, beating competition from several other major manufacturers. Successful approval followed trials in the UK carried out by Loughborough University.

This approval paves the way for the Burgman Fuel-Cell Scooter to be sold in all EU member states.

The scooter uses an air-cooled fuel cell and hydrogen tank mounted inside the chassis frame. Electricity is produced by the fuel cell to power the scooter and the only waste produced is water.

Suzuki says it is now working to create a full production version of the Burgman Fuel-Cell Scooter. An extended fleet of the scooters will be tested by Loughborough University, with further test bikes used in London.

Suzuki's chairman, Mr O Suzuki, said: "Our aim is to make eco-friendly fuel cell scooters increasingly common in Europe, in line with the establishment of hydrogen filling stations and other necessary infrastructure."
