Mitsubishi e-Evolution performance electric concept

Mitsubishi brings back hallowed Evolution badge, though this time for an electric concept car.

What's the news?

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is sorely missed by enthusiasts the world over. Through ten iterations, numerous rallying successes (thanks to Father Dougal's doppelganger Tommi Makinen) and constant battles with whatever version of Subaru's Impreza had been launched that month, it won the hearts of petrolheads with its tenacious grip, shocking cross-country pace and cartoonish looks. Sadly, the Evolution name disappeared off the radar a few years ago, but details have emerged from Japan of a new model wearing the famous badge.

It's only a concept for now, but according to the blurb, the Mitsubishi e-Evolution 'blends Mitsubishi Motors' signature 4WD and electric powertrain know-how with advanced Artificial Intelligence technology under a low slung aerodynamic SUV Coupe shape'. No significant deviation from the brand's current focus on SUVs and hybrids, then, but at least there's a small hint of what lies beneath.

Mitsubishi has found itself in no small amount of financial bother in recent times, and this crossover-type vehicle is a statement of intent following its buyout by the Nissan-Renault alliance. Judging by the single picture released by the firm, its lines aren't as severe as some of the more recent Mitsubishi concept cars, though there's something rather unusual happening around the C-pillar area. Crossovers sell, so don't be too surprised if there is some sort of announcement regarding a new model at the concept's debut at the Tokyo motor show next month.

The firm has a strong history of building tough and dependable all-wheel drive vehicles, so there should be no worries in that regard. Also, let's not forget that the Evolution name has been seen on an SUV before; Google 'Pajero Evolution', and prepare to be amazed at the lengths that Mitsubishi went to in the effort to homologate its little SUV for the Dakar Rally...
