Goodwood Festival of Speed Bernie Ecclestone sculpture

Goodwood Festival of Speed 2017 shows off Bernie Ecclestone tribute created by sculptor Gerry Judah.

What's the news?

Goodwood threw open its gates to the 2107 Festival Of Speed yesterday, and we have the first images of the dramatic Bernie Ecclestone sculpture which will form the centrepiece of the show.

Once again created by artist Gerry Judah, it's a massive ring-shape with five extending arms, upon which are mounted a Connaught GP car, a Lotus 72, a Brabham BT59, a nineties Ferrari F1, and a current Mercedes-AMG F1, representing the five 'ages' of Bernie's life and career.

"Coming up with a sculpture for Goodwood is always a challenge", said Judah. "They have to be different, dynamic and dangerous, as motorsport itself. This year is no exception given we are celebrating an individual, a phenomenon, and what better way than producing a firecracker."

Bernie himself will be in attendance, and the theme of the Festival this year is 'Peaks of Performance - Motorsport's Game-Changers' theme, paying tribute to the high- watermarks of motorsport.

Ferrari's 70th birthday will form part of the Festival's celebrations, as will the 110th birthday of Brooklands, Tom Kristensen's 50th birthday and the 20th anniversary of his first Le Mans win alongside a veritable host of legends of motorsport including current World Champion Nico Rosberg.

For the first time, Goodwood opens the doors on FoS Future Lab, an exhibit exploring the travel, transport and technology of the future, featuring autonomous Robocars, VR drone racing, flying cars, never-seen-before NASA photography and much more.

The four-day event will culminate on Sunday with Goodwood's first ever drift competition including all the current stars of the drifting world and finally the spectacular Sunday Shootout where the fastest champions of the weekend will compete for the title and the trophy.
