More teaser details on the new Hyundai Kona

New small crossover to take Hyundai to best-selling role in Europe by 2021

What's the news?

Well, in spite of the number of crystal clear spy pics floating around on t'internet (they have that on computers now?), Hyundai is still insisting on slow-revealing the new Kona small crossover to us, and the latest heavily-shadowed image shows, among the smoke and lights, the Kona's multilayered face, which (when you strip away the special effects) looks rather like a cross between the new Citroen C3 and the old Hyundai ix35.

According to Hyundai "the all-new Kona's silhouette emphasises the voluminous, aggressive body styling featuring sleek and sharp shapes. Its strong and confident visual presence is characterised by its wide stance and the twin headlamp design." The Kona also features the 'Cascading Grille,' Hyundai's new family identity.

The Kona will come with some new tech, including Hyundai's first-ever heads-up display, which will project a hi-def eight-inch image onto the windscreen.

There's rather more to the Kona than smoky photos and some new tech, though. It's going to be a critical model for Hyundai, especially in Europe, where the compact crossover segment is becoming especially crowded. Hyundai has stated that it wants to be the best-selling Asian manufacturer in Europe by 2021, leapfrogging the likes of Nissan, Toyota, Honda, and Mazda to do so. A tall order, but the Kona (a Hawaiian word) is likely to be a strong seller and a major pillar of that plan.
