Toyota previews new Yaris

The Yaris HSD concept indicates how the next-gen model could look.

What is it?

Toyota has matched its Hybrid Synergy Drive System with the B-segment Yaris for Europe with all-electric capability. The concept features numerous exterior alterations from the production model Yaris - these are mostly purpose driven, to further improve fuel efficiency. Rear view cameras replace he mirrors for cutting back air resistance, and a rear spoiler is fitted along with under-body covers and 18-inch aero wheels. Other key features include a solar panel covered roof that powers the air conditioning system.

However, the HSD concept also previews the next generation Toyota Yaris. Its wheelbase is stretched for improved legroom and boot space.

Launch of the European model is to start during the second half of 2012, with production at Toyota France's Valenciennes plant, following the hybrid version of the Toyota Auris to market.

Why's it here?

Downsizing is applicable to hybrids as well. Urban traffic tends to be less burdened with low-cost sustainability of the vehicle.

Show stopper or floor filler?

While not a show stopper, the Toyota Yaris HSD does preview a more interesting design direction for the company and of course a forthcoming hybrid version of its B-segment supermini.
