Volkswagen previews electric crossover
Volkswagen will reveal its latest I.D. electric concept at Auto Shanghai - and it's a coupe-like SUV.

What's the news?

Volkswagen has released a few teaser images and plenty of information about its star of the forthcoming Auto Shanghai motor show, a new electric crossover concept - the third in the I.D. series.

The name of the new concept has yet to be confirmed, but Volkswagen refers to it as a CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle), while also suggesting that it has been styled as a four-door coupe. Make what you will of the three teasing pictures that reveal the front and rear light designs and some of the body's curvature.

As with all the I.D. show cars, the Shanghai vehicle will be pure-electric, though this time around it will send power to both front and rear wheels. No power outputs, motor or battery details have been released, but Volkswagen claims that the crossover EV will have a range comparable to today's petrol cars, which seems to suggest over 500 kilometres.

Anything else?

The Shanghai concept will, like the other I.D. concepts, have the ability to drive autonomously. The 'driver' simply pushes the VW badge in the centre of the steering wheel and the whole assembly retracts to form part of the fully digital dashboard architecture, while the car takes over driving entirely.
