Third model in Kia Stinger GT family is 200hp diesel, expected to be big seller.

What's the news?

Kia's halo Stinger GT model may have only just been revealed to the world at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, but already we've got a new development in the vehicle's story: a diesel variant has been confirmed for Europe.

The unit in question is a 2.2-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel and like the two engines already outlined - the 2.0-litre, 255hp/353Nm turbocharged Theta four-cylinder and the 3.3-litre V6 turbo with 370hp/510Nm - the diesel is mounted in a longitudinal fashion in order to drive the rear wheels. It produces 200hp at 3,800rpm and 440Nm of torque across a wide band from 1,750- to 2,750rpm, allowing the Stinger GT to go from 0-100km/h in 8.5 seconds and on to a 225km/h maximum.

No official or even estimated fuel consumption or CO2 emissions figures have been revealed as yet, although, as it is undoubtedly going to be the 'greenest' Stinger of all three models specified thus far, the 2.2 diesel is expected to be by far and away the biggest seller in Europe. What we do know is that the 200hp diesel will have an eight-speed transmission and the option of four-wheel drive, just like the petrol cars.

Kia does state that the diesel model has slightly less impressive wheels and smaller brakes than the petrol-fuelled Stingers. The 2.2 comes as standard on 225/50 R17 tyres, fitted over 320mm front ventilated/315mm rear solid discs. The 2.0 petrol gets 18-inch wheels and tyres, with larger 345mm/330mm ventilated discs all round, while the 3.3 V6 runs on 225/40 R19 front, 255/35 R19 tyres - and it also gets meatier Brembo ventilated brakes of 350mm/340mm diameter front-to-rear.
