McLaren unveils Monocage II carbon tub
New Monocage II structure to form basis of McLaren’s second-gen cars, with Geneva reveal for first model.

What's the news?

McLaren is readying a new 'Monocage II' carbon-fibre structure for its model range, which it will use to underpin 15 new cars by 2022 - and the first of these next-gen vehicles will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Forming the pioneer of McLaren's mid-ranking Super Series - a run which includes such luminaries as the 12C and 12C Spider, the 650S Coupe and Spider, and the 675LT Coupe and Spider models - it marks the first big sea-change in McLaren's product line-up since the 12C first popped up in 2011.

Monocage II is composed of ultra-lightweight carbon fibre, replacing the carbon-and-metal architecture of the first-generation Super Series. McLaren says the lightest dry weight of the new Super Series car due to be revealed at Geneva is 1,283kg, less than its closest competitor vehicle and 18kg trimmer than a 650S with a comparable specification. It is also 'immensely rigid' and boasts a wider cabin entrance with a lower sill, to improve both ingress/egress and all-round visibility.

Anything else?

"Super Series is the core of the McLaren business and personifies the blend of extreme performance, crafted luxury and unparalleled driver involvement that is the McLaren heartland," explained McLaren's CEO, Mike Flewitt. "This is the first time we have replaced a product family and the new Super Series will be absolutely true to McLaren's pioneering spirit in being a revolutionary leap forwards, both for our brand and the supercar segment."
