Facelifted Peugeot 308 debuts

Peugeot's 308 range will receive a facelift in time for the arrival of its new big brother, the 508.

Peugeot has revealed a facelifted 308 line-up. Of most interest is the modernised styling and a new 'micro-hybrid' powertrain.

The new looks pick up on styling elements from the Peugeot 508 and the SR1 concept car.  Key to the 308's new face are LED headlamps with running lights, which are fitted as standard on the higher of two trim levels to be sold in Ireland.  Under the skin the 308 has lost weight - down by an average of 25kg across the range to the benefit of economy.

Further fuel saving comes with the micro-hybrid e-HDi Stop & Start technology.  Fitted to the 1.6-litre HDi 112 engine, it comes with the option of a manual or electronically controlled gearbox and, in five-door form, CO2 emissions as low as 98g/km.

It is not yet clear if that engine will be offered to Irish buyers, though a Peugeot insider told CompleteCar.ie that the 1.6-litre HDi diesel engine will be the predominant power plant. As before the Peugeot 308 is also available as an SW estate on special order and in two trim levels.

The new Peugeot 308 will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next month before going on sale in Ireland in May. The specification will be enhanced to the level of the current 308 special edition model.
