Minor changes keep Giulietta alive for a while yet.

What's the news?

Alfa, still awaiting the arrival of its much-hyped, much-delayed Giulia saloon, has given the Giulietta hatchback another round of small updates to try and keep it fresh and keep at least some punters in the showrooms until the new range of saloons and SUVs comes on stream.

With gala launches simultaneously taking place in Milan, Turin, Paris, Madrid and Frankfurt, you might be expecting this to be a major announcement of massive changes.

Er, no. Nope, it's just a new front end (and only barely new - lights, bumpers and grille have been tweaked) and the addition of the DCT dual clutch transmission option for the 120hp 1.6 JTD-M diesel engine.

Honestly, that's about it. There are some new interior elements, including an updated uConnect touch screen, which now includes LIVE connected services (music streaming, Facebook, Twitter, traffic alerts etc.), and the new Alfa Performance app, which allows drivers to create their own personalised trip computer.

Meanwhile, the DCT transmission option on the 1.6 diesel has emissions and consumption figures (claimed of course) of 74.3mpg (3.8l/100km) and 99g/km of Co2. Not bad for a car that can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 10.2 seconds.

There has been an update to the trim levels, which are now called Giulietta, Giulietta Super, Giulietta Tecnica, Giulietta Speciale and Giulietta Veloce. Standard equipment across the range now includes leather steering wheel with audio remote controls, air conditioning, five-inch Uconnect Live with Bluetooth connectivity, the Alfa DNA selector, six airbags, 16-inch 'Turbine' alloy wheels, one-touch electric windows all round and steering-wheel paddle shifters on TCT-equipped models.

There's also a new Lusso pack that includes leather upholstery, aluminium bits and a bigger uConnect screen with 3D sat-nav.

On the outside, there are now piano-black bumper inserts and extra red trim on sporty models.

Not exactly the stuff of a gala launch, then but a few welcome changes and additions. The last time Alfa updated the Giulietta (in 2014) we called it the most improved car of the year. Will we say the same again this time? We'll find out when sales start in April.
