Gorgeous Mazda CX-9 SUV gets new 2.5 turbo, but will either come to Europe?

What's the news?

Well, it's good news and bad news. The good news is that Mazda is using the Los Angeles motor show to show off its new CX-9 SUV - that's the big, very handsome seven-seater you can see in these photos. Nice, isn't it?

And it should shift a bit too - Mazda's new engine is also making its debut in the car. It's a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol unit with all the usual low-friction, high-efficiency refinements you'd expect from a Mazda SkyActiv engine.

With 250hp and 420Nm of torque it should be no slouch in the performance department, and Mazda claims that it doesn't suffer from the usual issues of big turbo engine - namely turbo lag when accelerating and disappointing economy when you actually get to the fuel pumps.

The bad news? Neither is coming here, at least not yet. Mazda says definitively that the CX-9 won't make it to Europe, which seems a shame given how good looking it is. It's the Derek Zoolander of big SUVs. The engine though? That might make it here. Europe is slowly but surely turning its back on diesel power and if the new engine can be made to return decent economy and emissions figures in, say, a Mazda6 or a Mazda CX-5, then it could well make it to this side of the pond.
