Dublin 'third most congested city'

Traffic data has placed Dublin as the third most traffic congested city in Europe.

Dublin has placed a shocking third on the league table of traffic congestion, behind Paris in second and London first.

The data comes from NAVTEQ, which supplies maps, traffic and location information to satellite navigation companies. It looked at the rush hours of all the major Western European cities (more than one million inhabitants) to compile the list.

It used a mix of criteria to determine the biggest rush hour delay for an average driver. Traffic is influenced by 'constant factors' says NAVTEQ, including topographical, location of working population, public transport, roadworks and traffic incidents.

As NAVTEQ director and traffic enthusiast Andreas Erwig puts it: "These circumstances and many others intersect with time to produce traffic, because the fascinating complexity of traffic is that it's not only about movement from here to there, but from now to then."

The list of most congested cities is as follows:

1.      London
2.      Paris
3.      Dublin
4.      Berlin
5.      Stockholm
6.      Hamburg
7.      Manchester
8.      Lyon
9.      Vienna
10.    Marseilles
