Irish market to get petrol engine in the RC coupé.

Lexus is launching a new version of the IS saloon and it's not going to be a hybrid (shock!). Don't worry, the existing IS 300h will continue with its hybrid drivetrain, but the range is going to expand with the launch of the IS 200t.

That will come with a new 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, developing 241hp and 350Nm of torque. It effectively replaces the old V6-engined IS 250, but it's much more economical - 7.5 litres per 100km on average rather than 9.2 litres/100km. It is powered by basically the same 2.0-litre turbo engine already seen in the NX crossover, but much modified so that it will fit lengthways in the IS's nose and power the rear wheels, instead of the front ones.

It drives those rear wheels through an eight-speed 'Sports Direct Shift' automatic gearbox (a gearbox we really, really wish would replace the CVT transmission in the hybrid IS) and instead of dials in the instrument cluster that tell you what the hybrid is up to, the 200t gets a turbo boost gauge and a monitor for the stop-start system.

"The 2.0-litre engine gained a lot of praise from customers and critics when fitted to the NX 200t, and its addition to the IS line has made it an even stronger proposition for customers who want a blend of performance, economy and driveability," said a Lexus spokesperson. "The Lexus turbo engine is a high-technology affair which sits well alongside IS's existing Hybrid Drive and 3.5-litre V6 quad-cam powerplants. It's a sensational fit for a vehicle already known for its high levels of standard specification and outstanding drive experience."

Now for the bad news - it's not coming to Ireland. According to Lexus head office here, there just wouldn't be sufficient interest in a non-diesel car in the sports saloon segment at the moment. Lexus feels that the hybrid IS 300h offers buyers a suitable alternative, and customers interested in switching from their diesel-powered German saloons will stick with the hybrid rather than looking at petrol.

Anything else?

But now for the good news - we will get this new engine in Ireland, not in the NX crossover but in the new RC coupé, when the RC 200t and hybrid RC 300h arrive in January of 2016. Given how much we enjoyed driving the 500hp RC F, the thought of that coupé with a lightweight, rev-happy 2.0-litre turbo is giving us something to look forward to after Christmas.
