Fancy racing with the big boys? BMW has just the thing in its new M6 GT3.

The Frankfurt Motor Show is the first public outing for the BMW M6 GT3 customer race car shorn of disguise and adorned in the BMW Motorsport race livery.

Exterior

It's clear that the GT3 racer is based on the standard M6 Coupé, but the body is made of carbon fibre and despite a significant number of aerodynamic add-ons (check out the huge rear wing and ankle-snapping front splitter for example) it weighs in at just 1,300kg. Those aerodynamics have been honed in BMW's own wind tunnel.

Interior

It's a full-blooded race car, so don't expect much in the way of creature comforts. There's a lot more space inside than in this car's predecessor though (the Z4 GT3), which should aid comfort. The driver's seat is centrally mounted too.

Mechanicals

BMW doesn't quote power output or performance figures for the M6 GT3, but we do know that it's powered by a version of the road car's 4.4-litre V8, fed by two turbochargers. That model's twin-clutch automatic gearbox is replaced by a six-speed sequential competition transmission, but drive is still to the rear wheels only.

Anything else?

In spite of the livery of the Frankfurt show car, BMW does not plan to campaign the M6 GT3 as a factory effort. It has been designed to be a customer machine with full BMW Motorsport support. The price? Just €379,000.
