Bike-friendly Honda concept for Frankfurt Motor Show.

Honda will be showing off this bike-friendly Civic estate concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week.

The Active Life Concept has been designed to show off how versatile the Civic Tourer is, and how much can theoretically be made of its cavernous cargo space. So, out go the back seats entirely and in comes a smart pleading rack, which can hold two bikes. There's a retractable arm so that the a bike can be held up at eye level to make repairs or maintenance a bit easier.

Other maintenance accessories include a built-in integrated air pump, a large light located on the tailgate, an extended shade area and a retractable bench. There's also a toolbox, bottle holder, water tank and a front wheel holder, which are all integrated within the boot side lining. Other clever storage solutions include a special aero shape roof box designed to accommodate essential cycling accessories such as shoes and helmets.

On the outside, the Tourer gets a custom metallic blue paint job with contrasting silver roof (expect to see that on actual production Civics soon), and there are new 18-inch alloys and a sportier bumper design. Inside, the blue theme is continued with blue stitching everywhere, sporty black roof lining and suede sports seats.

Honda will also have its Guinness World Record fuel economy Civic on the stand. Using an unmodified Civic Tourer 1.6 iDTEC diesel, a Honda team set record fuel economy figures on a 25-day 'real-world' challenge in June that saw the car average 2.82 litres per 100km (100.31mpg) in a 13,498km drive across 24 contiguous EU countries.
