SEAT has boosted the power of its excellent hot hatch flagship, the Leon Cupra.
The Spanish motor now boasts a total of 290hp, up 10hp on its predecessor, and while torque remains unchanged at 350Nm, that muscle is available across a marginally wider rev-range, too - now peaking from 1,700- to 5,800rpm, instead of 1,750- to 5,300rpm.
It doesn't seem to do anything much for the on-paper stats, as 0-100km/h is still quoted as 5.7 seconds for the six-speed DSG model and 5.8 seconds for the manual (with the same number of ratios), and top speed remains pegged at 250km/h. SEAT does say it can lap a track faster than the 280 could, though, so that Nürburgring lap record could be on the cards again...
Fuel economy is also unaffected, the quoted combined figure for the DSG standing at 42.8mpg (6.6 litres/100km), but the CO2 emissions have been trimmed slightly, from a best of 154g/km previously to 149g/km now - yet that doesn't affect its Band C road tax rating (€390 per annum) over here.
The only way you'll spot one of these 290s is from the badge on the boot, which proudly states the Cupra's improved prowess. You might be able to hear it, though, as the exhaust system has been retuned to give the engine a better soundtrack.
Anything else?
The performance pack upgrade for the Leon Cupra - including Brembo brake callipers, new wheels and grippier tires - is still available as an option, while the car retains its Dynamic Chassis Control, front differential lock, progressive steering and Cupra Drive Profile settings.
The SEAT Leon Cupra 290 arrives in Ireland in January 2016 priced at €36,495 for the five-door version and €37,495 for the ST estate.
