If you thought the Hyundai Genesis executive saloon was a crackpot idea, then this one should have you widening your eyes in alarm - it's the Hyundai Vision G Concept Coupé and it's powered by a 5.0-litre V8. Yup, you read that right.
Revealed by Hyundai Motor America at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art this week, the Vision G has been described as the inspiration for its future family of premium products, said to offer 'luxury, performance and style'.
Peter Schreyer, Hyundai's president and chief design officer - and the bloke responsible for the first-gen Audi TT - said: "The concept was designed with coordinated input from Hyundai design studios around the world, but was led by our team here in the US. The design is our interpretation of the idea that Hyundai breathes into all of its vehicles - a DNA that balances design and performance with the idea that you don't need to be over the top in terms of glitz and stereotypical luxury cues."
The Vision G has been designed around the concept of chivalry. This doesn't mean that it's particularly good at jousting, or draping its cape over a puddle of muddy water for a lady to step over - rather that the design 'doesn't need to shout to be noticed and respected'. It's designed to look like it's perpetually in motion, even when it is standing still, and one feature of its 'respectful luxury' are doors that automatically open, as if being operated by an invisible valet.
Under that sweeping bonnet is a 'Tau' 5.0-litre V8, developing 420hp at 6,000rpm and 520Nm at 5,000rpm. The Tau engines are specific to the US and feature high-pressure direct injection.
