Poor conditions have left roads a potholed mess says the AA

Nearly 23 percent of motorists have hit a pothole severely enough to warrant a repair according to a new AA survey.

A survey by the Automobile Association has revealed that 22.9 percent of motorists have hit a pothole severely enough to warrant a garage repair or a call out from the AA.

"Often a pothole just hits the car and gives the driver a major fright but does not actually do any damage. However there are plenty of cases where it is an expensive repair," said Conor Faughnan, Director of Policy AA Ireland.

The AA claimed that in most cases the repair costs less than €100, however in some instances potholes have damaged expensive components like stability control, track rods and the suspension system.

As part of the survey, motorists who had suffered damage from potholes were asked if they had reported it to the local authority and whether anything had been done about it. The AA claims that 24 percent reported the pothole and in 17 percent of the cases it was repaired but 57 percent said that nothing was done about it.
