Subaru's fifth generation Outback is on sale now with a recommended retail price of €40,995. There are two trim levels - SE and SE Premium - as well as a range of new features including 'EyeSight' collision avoiding technology.
Exterior
Evolution is the theme for the fifth generation Outback, retaining the overall shape of its predecessor. A hexagonal front grille and 'hawk-eye' headlights give the new model the current Subaru family look. LED headlamps, privacy glass and 17-inch alloy wheels are fitted as standard. The Premium version adds a power operated tailgate, sunroof and keyless entry.
Interior
On the inside, there is more room and higher quality materials. The SE comes with a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, heated front seats and an electrically adjustable driver's seat. If you want power operation for the front passenger seat that is available on the SE Premium - along with leather upholstery, satellite navigation and push button start.
Mechanicals
It wouldn't be a Subaru without a Boxer engine; in the Outback it is a 2.0-litre turbodiesel that generates 150hp and 350Nm of torque. Drive goes to all four wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox with an option of Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission on the SE Premium.
Steering and suspension changes include stiffer front struts, revised spring and damper rates plus a more direct steering rack. All models get Active Torque Vectoring, which brakes the inside wheels when cornering to keep understeer and oversteer in check.
Anything else?
The Outback is available with EyeSight on models with Lineartronic transmission. This uses stereo colour camera technology to scan the road for potential hazards. There are six features included with EyeSight: Pre-collision Braking, Pre-collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure & Sway Warning, Pre-collision Steering Assist and Lead Vehicle Start Alert.
