Volkswagen Scirocco GTS gets updated

Volkswagen Scirocco GTS gets updated Volkswagen Scirocco GTS gets updated
GTI engine coupé unveiled ahead of Shanghai debut.

A facelifted version of the Volkswagen Scirocco GTS has been unveiled ahead of its debut at the Shanghai motor show next week. The 'new' GTS boasts more power than before and a host of interior upgrades.

Exterior

As standard, the GTS sports the R-Line exterior package meaning more aggressive front and rear bumpers, custom side skirts, a rear spoiler and unique diffuser. But, you knew that already, the current GTS, that we have had since 2013, has all that too, so what is different about the facelift model? Well there is a new alloy wheel design - 18-inch 'Norwich' to be exact with 19-inch 'Lugano' available from the options list. The brake calipers are also painted red as standard and the GTS is available in six colours: Deep Black, Indium Grey, Urano Grey, Pure White, Oryx White and Flash Red. A contrasting GTS body stripe can be ordered, though it will be standard fitment in markets like China.

Interior

Inside the GTS model gets black headlining, piano black trim, GTS badges and a set of stainless steel pedals, all to give it that 'sporty' look. As if that wasn't enough there is also contrast stitching on the GTS monikered sports seats, fabric as standard or leather optionally. Joining leather on the options list are also the likes of xenon headlights and a panoramic sunroof.

All fairly standard stuff then but the big news surrounds the infotainment system with the Scirocco finally getting the MIB II modular unit that debuted on the Mk7 Golf way back in 2012. The system will be offered as standard on all Scirocco models from next month with satellite navigation again available optionally.

Mechanicals

Under the bonnet of the GTS lies the beating heart of a GTI, the Golf GTI to be specific, meaning the stylish coupe packs 220hp from its turbocharged 2.0-litre engine and is available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed DSG transmission. Volkswagen quotes a 0-100km/h time of 6.5 seconds whatever the gearbox and fuel economy of 46mpg (6.1 litres/100km).

Anything else?

All looks good right? Unfortunately it will not be coming to Ireland. It has been decreed that the new GTS will be petrol powered only, no diesel as before.
