Toyota RAV4 goes hybrid

Toyota RAV4 goes hybrid
Electronic all-wheel drive and new safety systems for RAV4.

It shouldn't come as a huge surprise that Toyota has given its RAV4 the hybrid treatment. The firm has already done so with some of its smaller cars, and with more and more car makers turning to hybrid technology to make larger SUVs meet ever-tightening emissions regulations it was only a matter of time before the RAV4 gained some larger batteries and electric motors.

Exterior

There will be a few subtle visual differences between the regular RAV4 and this new hybrid version. A restyled front bumper along with the introduction of full LED headlights differentiates the RAV4 Hybrid from the other models in the range. Small hybrid badging is the only other giveaway.

Interior

Changes to the interior of the RAV4 Hybrid consist of a new full colour TFT screen. This includes a new 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor that enables the driver to have a virtual overview of the car using a series of cameras. There have also been improvements to the feel of the cabin through greater use of soft touch materials.

Mechanicals

Powering the RAV4 Hybrid is a system similar to that seen in the Lexus NX, which comprises of a 2.5-litre petrol engine coupled with an electric motor that drives the front wheels. A secondary electric motor located at the rear powers the back axle. With all-wheel drive, the Toyota will also have plenty of pulling power, with a towing capacity of 1,650kg. Adding to this is Toyota's Trailer Sway Control system that helps provide greater levels of control when towing.

Anything else?

Not only will the RAV4 have a lower emissions rating (not that we know what that is as yet), it will also feature more safety systems. These include an improved Pre-Collision System (PCS) that now functions from 10km/h up to the vehicle's top speed and can reduce speed by up to 36km/h through autonomous braking. A secondary element to this system can detect potential collisions with pedestrians at speeds between 10- and 80km/h and can reduce the vehicle's speed by up to 30km/h before any input from the driver. The RAV4 Hybrid is due to arrive in Europe late this year and will be part of the 2016 model line-up.
