Mitsubishi will debut a new small SUV concept at the Geneva Motor Show called the Concept XR-PHEV II. It is said to give a strong indication as to the look of the new ASX, which will be the second plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) from Mitsubishi.
Exterior
The Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV II adopts a much sportier image than we are used to seeing from the Japanese carmaker and is clearly aimed at taking on the likes of the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur. Its taut lines mark a more dynamic look that features a sloping roofline, which gives it a near-coupé-like appearance.
Interior
We will have to wait until the Geneva Motor Show to have a proper look inside the Concept XR-PHEV II, but Mitsubishi tells us to expect a minimalist-looking centre console framed in aluminium. Much of the cockpit is said to be driver-focused and will feature contrasting black and silver hues.
Mechanicals
The real highlight of this show car will be the new PHEV system, which is designed to be used in front-engined front-wheel drive models. It is made up of a MIVEC petrol engine, with a new electric motor and power drive unit all fitted in under the bonnet. By working together, CO2 emissions could be less than 40g/km when on the move, which will undoubtedly be easier on consumers' pockets when it comes to motor taxation.
Like in the Outlander PHEV, this system will have a battery that can be charged by plugging in to a home or public charge point and will be able to store power until later on in the journey. Unlike many traditional electric vehicles though, it can also use the car's petrol combustion engine as a generator in order to recharge the battery without the need to plug into the electricity network.
Anything else?
According to our sources, the current Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is due for an extensive facelift later on this year too, although it is not yet known whether any modifications or updates will be made to the hybrid system.
