Mercedes-AMG GT prepares to race

Competition-ready Mercedes-AMG GT3 will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

Mercedes-AMG will reveal the race-prepared GT3 version of the AMG GT. The successor to the SLS AMG GT3 complies with FIA regulations and is intended to expand the customer motorsport programme, which was started in 2010. We will have to wait until 3rd March to see the real car, so far Mercedes has released just a couple design sketches and no technical details.

The full story will be revealed in Geneva; but from the sketches, it is clear the car will feature some serious aerodynamic additions to provide downforce at racing speeds. It is also possible that the GT3 racer will inspire a higher-performance version of the GT.

Speaking to Autocar magazine in the UK Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers said that a street-legal version of the GT3 is on the way. It is expected that it will be lighter than the Mercedes-AMG GT by at least 80kg and boast about 550hp. Moers was keen to stress that the new model is not just about straight-line performance but also driveability, lap time and feel.

Anything else?

Mercedes-AMG hasn't said what name will be used for the road car but it won't be known as the GT3; that, apparently, is reserved for Porsche.
