BMW 2 Series gets smallest engine and 4WD

BMW transplants MINI engine into 218i.

BMW is doing a bit of tinkering with the 2 Series Coupé range, including introducing a new entry-level engine and an extra xDrive four-wheel drive option.

The new 218i gets the same 136hp, 220Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine as you'll find in the latest MINI Cooper. BMW quotes a 118g/km CO2 emissions rating (with either the six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox) and a 5.1 litres per 100km fuel consumption score. The 0-100km/h sprint takes 8.8 seconds while the top speed is 212km/h. Sales start next March.

Anything else?

Alongside the 218i, there's also a new xDrive all-wheel drive variant. To sit alongside the M235i xDrive and 225d xDrive, there's now a 220d xDrive version, powering all four wheels. Its vital stats include 4.3 litres per 100km fuel consumption, a 113g/km CO2 rating and a 6.8-second 0-100km/h time.
