What's the news?
Mazda has shown off a racing version of the MX-5 at the SEMA show in Las Vegas.
Destined to take part in the Global Cup racing series - across Europe, the US and Asia - the MX-5 is expected to use an uprated version of the 2.0-litre Skyactiv engine from the American version of the road car (Europe of course getting the 1.5-litre engine), with Mazda Motorsports adding racing suspension, brakes and aerodynamics to the package.

The pictures show a mean looking car with a lower stance, beefier body kit and fully stripped-out, caged interior - all befitting of a purpose-built racer.

Anything else?

The MX-5 racer will be an 'off-the-peg' competition car, delivered ready to race by a single supplier. This should make it a popular choice in cup racing series across the planet.
